Edge Lane improvement scheme wins national award

01 July 2009

Edge Lane Highways and Environmental Improvement Scheme has picked up the Urban Design Award at the Institution of Highways and Transportation awards.

The Edge Lane scheme was project managed by consulting and business services Group, Mouchel, through 2020 Liverpool's specialist project and programme management team.  2020 Liverpool is a joint venture partnership between Liverpool City Council and Mouchel.

The Urban Design award recognises good practice in urban design and the process of place-making.

The Edge Lane corridor is the strategic route into Liverpool from the motorway network and plays a crucial role in presenting a good first impression of the city.

The project created a high quality public realm, with feature artwork including lighting and projected images at the Rocket junction which is seen as a gateway feature.

More than 100 semi-mature trees were planted to help create an urban boulevard, with landscaped verges, new pedestrian and cycle-crossing facilities, a feature oak tree, new access and streetscape including artwork and open spaces.

The judges for the IHT/Transport for London award said the project "respects the movement and place functions and re-engages people, creating a front door to a distinct place".

Project Manager Chris Founds said: "This is another excellent achievement for the Edge Lane Project and yet again demonstrates the quality of project that has been managed, designed and delivered on-site."

The Edge Lane project has already been recognised in other awards including the BALI environmental award, Mouchel Excellence Award (environment) and Considerate Constructor Award. It was also highly commended in the North West Regional Construction Awards and shortlisted in the RICS Award.
